Instructors

Fiona Aldous

Fiona Aldous is a Principal with Wiss Janney Elstner Associates. She has performed comprehensive building enclosure commissioning on numerous buildings and a variety of building enclosure projects throughout North America. Aldous holds a post-graduate Master of Architecture, Bachelor of Architecture, and Bachelor of Science degrees. She was a prime author of the BECx industry’s founding document, NIBS/ASHRAE Guideline 3-The Building Enclosure Commissioning Process. She serves on ASHRAE technical committees encompassing Building Materials and Building Envelope Performance and Building Commissioning. She is a founding member of the Building Enclosure Commissioning Collaborative (BECxC) and works to educate and promote the implementation of BECx.

Joseph Lstiburek

Joe Lstiburek, PhD, PEng, is a forensic engineer who investigates building failures, and an internationally recognized authority on moisture-related building problems and indoor air quality, including rain penetration, air barriers, vapor barriers, air quality, durability, and construction technology. He is the former chairman of ASTM E241–Increasing the Durability of Building Assemblies from Moisture-Induced Damage and a reviewer of Chapters 21 and 22 of ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals. He is an ASHRAE fellow and member of ASHRAE 62.2–Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality. He has appeared on PBS’ NOVA (“Can Buildings Make You Sick?”). He is the author of the US Department of Energy Handbook on Moisture Control and a special contributor to the EPA guidance document on Building Air Quality: A Guide for Building Owners and Facility Managers.

Chris Schumacher

Chris is recognized as an expert in the field of building monitoring as well as enclosure and building systems testing. Chris’s formal education in architecture and engineering is balanced by two decades of building enclosure design and testing experience.

Chris oversees much of the work done through RDH Building Science Laboratories, and he regularly consults on the development of experimental test programs for academic institutions, building product manufacturers, and government agencies.

Examples of Chris’s research work include the Thermal Metric Project, a multiyear investigation of thermal performance in full-scale wall assemblies; and the development of an apparatus and test method that measures dense-pack airflow resistance to support the development of the Building Performance Institute’s test standard BPI-103 and material standard BPI-102.

Before joining RDH, Chris was a founding principal of Building Science Consulting Inc. and a founding partner of Balanced Solutions Inc., an innovative Canadian building science RD&D consultancy.

John Davis

John holds dual appointments at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, College of Engineering.  He is an associate faculty associate and program director in the Office of Engineering Professional Development and a research engineer at the Industrial Refrigeration Consortium (IRC).  He holds a BSME degree (Iowa State University) and MS degrees in Engineering (Purdue University) and Engineering Management (Northwestern University).  John’s professional interests include technical leadership, HVAC products and systems, DX refrigeration, industrial refrigeration, geothermal system design, thermal systems optimization, building science and building energy management.  John is a registered P.E. and a member of both ASHRAE and IIAR.
