Course Overview

This online course focuses on the development, implementation, and ongoing management of a 5S program, with the goal of creating a visual workplace. The concepts and associated examples, and supporting course materials, focus on production operations. However, the concepts can be adapted to administrative processes.

This is a synchronous online course—everyone enrolled in the course is going through at the same pace week-by-week. This is a five-week course using the Canvas learning management system. One-hour live sessions are conducted each week with the course instructor.

The overall success and long-term benefits of this course will be best realized if 3-5 associates complete the course together. Ideally, the sponsor of the 5S effort and those responsible for planning, implementing, and sustaining the 5S activities.

Additional Information

Resources needed prior to the start of the course:

  • Course attendees will purchase their own copy of 5S for Operators: 5 Pillars of the Visual Workplace (ISBN-13 978-1563271236).
  • Companies should purchase the GBMP 5S Challenges Video (Available at gbmp.org) to be shared among employees attending course.

Course Outline

Each week includes prerecorded voice over PowerPoint presentations. Additionally, there are two videos, and four short articles. During Weeks 4 and 5 course attendees will complete a focused 5S event, at their place of employment, and present the before and after results to the class.

Jeff Oelke

Jeff Oelke oversees the Maintenance and Reliability Certificate offered through the University of Wisconsin–Madison Engineering Professional Development. Mr. Oelke has over 20 years of experience working with manufacturing companies. In addition to a thorough understanding of Lean, Six Sigma, Theory of Constraints and Quick Response Manufacturing strategies, Mr. Oelke has firsthand experience with assembly, metal forming, welding, plastics, printed circuit layout and fabrication, paint and wood products manufacturing processes. Prior to joining Engineering Professional Development, Mr. Oelke was the managing member of the Continuum Management Group, LLC, Richland Center, WI, and the division manager for supplier development at Deere and Company’s Commercial and Consumer Equipment Division. Mr. Oelke possesses MS and BS degrees with concentrations in manufacturing operations and computer hardware architecture.  He has been certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt by the American Society for Quality (ASQ).
